Laps for Louie: Join the Fight against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

London Knights News Release

LONDON, ON - The London Knights Hockey Academy in partnership with Total Package Hockey, Blyth Academy and the CCH Leap Program is proud to present the Laps for Louie Ironman Tournament and Skate-A-Thon taking place on Friday, May 8th at the Western Fair Sports Centre in support of Jesse's Journey.

Laps for Louie is an event named for Louie Facca, a 7 year old boy who was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, DMD, at 2 years of age. Duchenne is both the most common childhood and one of the most severe forms of muscular dystrophy, affecting 1 in every 3,500 boys. DMD is caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes for dystrophin, a structural protein found in small amounts in normal muscle but absent in DMD. Because dystrophin is missing, muscle cells are damaged. Muscle weakness leads to issues with the heart and lungs and young men with Duchenne generally live into their mid-twenties. There is currently no cure for DMD, but Laps for Louie is striving to help in the fight to find one.

The Laps for Louie Ironman Tournament will feature a number of divisions including Minor and Major PeeWee, Minor and Major Bantam, and Minor Midget and will cost $400 per team. With teams of only 6 players (5 skaters and a goalie), 20 minute games being played, and 5 games being guaranteed to each team, it's a great opportunity to have fun and raise money for such a worthwhile cause. The Ironman Tournament will run from 8:00am - 5:00pm on Friday, May 8th at the Western Fair Centre.

Following the tournament, there will be a 5-hour Laps for Louie skate-a-thon. For a $20 per person registration fee, or a donation of your choice greater than $20, you can participate in the skate-a-thon which will include skating on the Western Fair's Olympic-sized ice pad for 5 hours beginning at 6:00pm. In addition to skating, there will also be sumo suit wrestling, a photobooth, board games, yoga, a silent auction table, and a 50/50 raffle. All proceeds from the entire day and night will go to Jesse's Journey to help aid the fight against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
