Charlottetown Islanders News Release
Charlottetown Islanders general manager and head coach Jim Hulton has announced that the team has acquired goaltender Tye Austin, right winger Genaro Fronduto, a 2023 3rd round pick, 2023 5th round pick, and a 2025 2nd round pick from the Gatineau Olympiques in exchange for goaltender Francesco Lapenna.
Austin is a 20-year-old netminder in the midst of his first QMJHL season after four years spent with the OHL's Peterborough Petes. Standing 6'6 and residing from Pembroke, Ontario, Austin is currently sporting a 7-0-0-2 record and sits fourth among qualified QMJHL netminders with a .913 save percentage and a 2.29 goals against average.
In 63 games with the Petes, Austin recorded a 20-27-3 record with a .876 save percentage. He was originally selected by Peterborough in the third round, 43rd overall, in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. He spent part of the 2020-2021 season with the AHL's Belleville Senators and was invited to an NHL development camp with the Florida Panthers in 2021.
18-year-old forward Genaro Fronduto is in his rookie QMJHL season after signing with the Olympiques as a free agent at the start of this season. In 22 games with Gatineau, Fronduto has picked up two goals and five points.
Lapenna created many memories for the Islanders en route to the 2022 President's Cup Final. In 15 games last postseason, the man affectionately known as Franky posted ten wins and a .908 save percentage. This season, Lapenna is 12-10-1-0 with a .919 save percentage and 2.59 goals against average.
"We want to wish Franky the best of luck in Gatineau. He has been a great teammate and leader for our organization on and off the ice over the last year," said Hulton on trading Lapenna. "We were happy to complete a deal that sees him go to a team that is contending for a championship."
On behalf of the Islanders organization, we'd like to welcome Tye and Genaro to Charlottetown and wish Franky all the best on his new adventure in Gatineau!
