Lanning's Two RBI Hits Top Tornadoes 3-1

July 23, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Jeff Lanning had two RBI hits for the New Jersey Jackals as they beat the Worcester Tornadoes 3-1 in a game called in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Jackals put two baserunners on with two outs in the frame before play was stopped due to heavy rains and lightning.

Walker McKinven made his second career start, leaving the game after 1.1 innings pitched with an arm injury. Walker finished his outing allowing a pair of runs on two hits. He walked four Jackals batters, including Nick Giarraputo to start the two-run rally in the second.

Mike Mullen came in to relieve the righty, allowing one run of his own plus one of the two he inherited from McKinven. Mullen has tossed 3.1 innings, giving up three hits and one run with one walk and one strikeout.

The Tornadoes scratched out their only run on a Johnny Welch single to score Chris Torres from second base. Torres doubled with one out in the fourth, recording only the second hit of the game against Isaac Pavlik.

Pavlik, who earned the win, completed five innings of work on 62 pitches. He gave up just three hits and retired the Tornadoes in order three times. His nine-pitch fifth inning in a light rain was the shortest frame for either teams' pitchers tonight.

The middle game of the series starts at 7:05pm on Tuesday, with Conner Hulse getting the nod for Worcester and Kyle Greenwalt opposing him. Pre-game coverage starts on USTREAM.tv at 6:50.
