Jackals Win Rain-Shortened Game One, Pavlik Ties Record

After playing a couple of marathon games this weekend, the Jackals only had to play the minimum four-and-a-half innings of baseball to defeat the visiting Worcester Tornadoes 3-1.

Isaac Pavlik pitched all five innings for New Jersey to earn his seventh victory of the season to improve to 7-1. In the abbreviated game at Yogi Berra Stadium, the lefty allowed one run on six hits while striking out four.

With the complete game, Pavlik also ties the Jackals' complete game record. He and Joel Bennett each have 15.

Rookie Walker McKinven made his second start of the season for Worcester. After only lasting an inning against the Rockland Boulders last week, McKinven went an inning-and-a-third before exiting the game due to injury. He allowed two runs on two hits while walking four batters. McKinven is now 0-2.

Mike Mullen came on in relief for McKinven, allowing one run on five hits.

The Jackals scored in the second off an RBI double by Matt Nandin and an RBI single by Jeff Lanning. Lanning would add another one-run single in the fourth. Before the game was called, the Jackals had two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Both of those hits - Giarraputo and Salotti - will count in the box score.

The Tornadoes scored their one run off a triple by Cameron Monger and subsequent RBI single by Johnny Welch in the fourth inning.

The win was also the shortest game in Jackals history, lasting only one hour and twenty minutes, besting the previous mark of one hour and thirty-five minutes on July 24, 2008 against the Quebec Capitales.

Jackals' outfielder Chris Curran's ten-game hitting streak come to a close in the abbreviated match-up.

The victory moved New Jersey manager Joe Calfapietra one closer to his 600th win. He now has 598 for his career.

With the win, New Jersey pushes their lead over the dormant Rockland Boulders to one-and-a-half games. They jump to 35-27, snapping their two-game losing streak in the process. The Jackals are six-and-a-half games back of the first-place Capitales.

Worcester drops to 18-44.

Kyle Greenwalt (3-2, 4.08) starts for the Jackals in game two tomorrow. He faces Worcester rookie Connor Hulse (0-0, 9.00). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with the pregame beginning at 6:55 p.m.
