Lannan Grounds Baysox Hitters in Fightins Loss

READING, Pa.---Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher John Lannan gave up two earned runs in seven innings of his second rehab start, but the Reading Fightin Phils (24-39) were blanked by the Bowie Baysox (30-31), 6-0, in front of 7,651 fans at FirstEnergy Stadium Wednesday night.
Lannan looked every bit like the pitcher who posted a 2.77 ERA before suffering a knee injury in an 11-2 loss to the Reds in April. The southpaw, who was originally limited to 85 pitches or six innings, flew through the first three innings after he induced seven groundouts to face the minimum.
After recording another groundout, he faced his first challenge of the night in the fourth inning after allowing two singles. Bowie's Caleb Joseph drove in the team's first run of the game after the Fightins bobbled a double play. It was like dÃÆéjÃÆàvu all over again in the seventh after the Baysox strung together three straight singles off Lannan. The 28-year old almost got of the jam, but Bowie tacked on their second run of the game after Reading couldn't complete the double play for the second time of the night.
Lannan exited the game after the seventh inning and threw 85 pitches, 61 of which were strikes. He surrendered two earned runs on seven hits (all singles), while striking out one and walking one. Over the start, Lannan notched a 14-1 groundout to flyout ratio.
Bowie starter Eddie Gamboa was equally impressive as the current big leaguer. A knuckleballer, Gamboa hurled seven innings of three-hit ball while striking out six to earn his second winning decision of the season. Reading hitters were only able to scatter base hits off the UC Davis product.
Following Lannan's departure, things got worse for the Fightins. Reliever Hector Neris gave up four runs on an error, walk, and three hits including a three-run homer by Joseph in the eighth inning. Trailing by six runs with two more chances to score, Fightins bats continued to be silenced, this time by reliever Jason Gurka, who tossed two scoreless innings of relief.
RHP Brody Colvin (2-0, 5.33 ERA) makes his return to the rotation on Thursday as the Fightins look to avoid being swept by Bowie and RHP Matt Wright (6-0,3.86). Fightins Fillers: Reading has now reached a season-high 15 games under .500 with the 6-0 loss...The Fightins' four hits were the second-lowest amount of the season...Reading was shutout for the fifth time this season and second time against the Baysox.
