New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - In their best finish to the 2013 season, the Fisher Cats (32-34) overcame a four-run ninth-inning deficit to stun the Akron Aeros (32-33) on Tuesday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Brad Glenn's single to left field plated A.J. Jimenez to complete a 9-8 come-from-behind victory and even the series with the Aeros at one game each.
The late-inning was set up when Akron scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning against Dustin Antolin. The rally broke a 4-4 tie and lined the Aeros up for their fifth straight win over the Fisher Cats in 2013.
In the bottom of the ninth, however, the Fisher Cats had different plans. Kevin Nolan (hit by pitch) and Adam Loewen (single) both reached to begin the inning. After Trey Haley retired the next two hitters, Kevin Pillar singled to make it an 8-5 game. A pitching change brought on Jose Flores (L; 5-2), who surrendered a wall-ball single to right by Ryan Schimpf to plate two more runs to cut the deficit to 8-7.
The Aeros nearly ended the game on the next play. Clint Robinson rolled a grounder to the right side of the infield and a diving stop kept the ball on the infield. However, a wild throw by second baseman Jose Ramirez skipped into the Fisher Cats dugout allowing Schimpf to score the tying run. Glenn followed a few moments later with his hit to left field to start the celebration for the 9-8 win.
Chorye Spoone (3-2) earned the win for the Fisher Cats with a scoreless ninth inning in relief. Flores took the loss allowing two runs and four hits without retiring a Fisher Cats hitter.
Neither starting pitcher figured into the decision as Deck McGuire went 5.1 innings allowing four runs with three strikeouts. Toru Murata had an early 4-0 lead to work with, but he allowed four runs in the third highlighted by a two-run homer from Robinson.
Robinson led the Fisher Cats 11-hit attack going 2-5 with his sixth long ball and two RBI. Glenn and Jimenez each had two hits while Pillar had two hits and two runs batted in.
The teams will now wrap up the series with the rubber game on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The series will conclude with Atlas Fireworks and fans can win a Nadeau's Subs gift card by playing Nadeau's Left-Center-Right. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com, at the Fisher Cats ticket office, and by calling (603) 641-2005.
The pitching match-up in the finale features Ryan Tepera (6-4, 4.12) against Akron righty Brett Brach (3-2, 4.54). Radio coverage of the game begins at 6:45 p.m. with Tom Gauthier on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and www.nhfishercats.com.
