Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers managed just six hits, but walked eight times Friday night to beat the Sugar Land Skeeters, 4-1, taking the opening game of the weekend series.
Sugar Land sent reliever Vicente Campos (1-2) to the hill for the seventh inning with Sugar Land up, 1-0, thanks to solid pitching from starter and Skeeters' newcomer Lucas Irvine. Trayvon Robinson welcomed the righty with a screaming homerun onto the Haller picnic deck in right, tying the game. Campos retired the next three before running into self-created trouble in the eighth.
Campos missed with 11 of his first 12 pitches of the inning, walking Josh Bell and Blake Gailen. Jimmy Paredes singled to load the bases for Ryan Casteel with no outs. Casteel also walked, forcing home pinch runner Carlos Garcia, to give Lancaster the 2-1 lead. K.C. Hobson grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, as a second run scored. Robinson picked up the fourth walk of the inning before Vladimir Frias banged an RBI single to the wall in right, scoring Paredes for the 4-1 cushion.
Matt Reynolds came in the ninth, pitching a scoreless frame for his 22nd save of the year.
Jonathan Albaladejo gave Lancaster one of his strongest starts of the year, going 7 2/3 innings of one run, seven strikeout baseball.
Sugar Land's lone run came in the third frame. Luke Dykstra cracked a leadoff double to left. Denis Phipps followed with a single up the middle. Dykstra headed home but took a wide turn around third and fell victim to Darian Sandford's arcing but accurate throw home. Phipps took second on the throw. After Alvero Rondon reached on a bobble by Hobson at first, Barett Barnes beat out a slow roller up the first base line, scoring Phipps.
Albaladejo was finally pulled from the contest with two outs in the eighth inning after hitting Sugar Land's Derek Norris with a pitch, then allowing Cordero to single.
Kevin Munson (6-3) stepped in and struck out Matt Chavez to prevent trouble.
The Barnstormers improved to 19-14 on the second half and have now won six straight for the first time since their record-breaking 12 game win streak in May. Sugar Land falls to 25-12 leading by four.
The Stormers-Skeeters series resumes Saturday night with Sugar Land's Yasutomo Kubo (3-0, 1.78 ERA) matching up with Lancaster southpaw John Anderson (3-2, 3.14 ERA). Tickets are available online and at the Two Dudes Box Office. It's another Saturday night fireworks game!
