Lancaster Victory Knocks Revs Out of First For First Time in Second Half

The Lancaster Barnstormers defeated the York Revolution in the middle game of the series 8-5 Monday night in front of 5, 924 fans at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Lancaster was led by Matt Watson's fourth inning grand slam to help them overtake the Revolution for first place in the Freedom Division for the first time in the second half. The Barnstormers now lead the "War of the Roses" series 6-5. York will look to avoid the sweep in the series finale on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
Lancaster took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after a couple of Revolution defensive miscues. With LF Wayne Lydon beating out an infield single to lead off the inning, he proceeded to second base on the play when a tough throw got past 1B Chris Nowak. Then the next batter, CF J.C. Holt, outran a bunt when the throw was off line to 2B Ramon Castro covering on the play, allowing Lydon to score.
The Revolution answered the next inning with SS Eric Eymann hitting a sacrifice fly to right field scoring LF James Shanks to tie the game at 1-1.
York would take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning with CF Scott Grimes blasting a solo home run over the deep left field fence.
The Barnstormers would continue the back and forth match against the Revs as they re-took the lead 3-2 in the bottom half of the inning. The first run scored when 3B Aaron Herr lined an RBI single to right field. Then RF Brandon Jones broke the tie when he drove a ground rule double to left center.
Lancaster opened the game up in the bottom of the fourth as DH Matt Watson sent the ball deep over the right field wall for a grand slam giving them a 7-2 lead.
For the third consecutive inning the Barnstormers put a run on the board as SS Iggy Suarez knocked his first homer of the year to left field, making it an 8-2 game in favor of Lancaster.
The Revolution responded in the sixth inning with three runs cutting the deficit to 8-5. With two outs and DH Jose Herrera, 3B Vince Harrison, and Nowak all aboard, Eymann smashed a two run single to left. C Octavio Martinez then hit a line drive over second base plating Nowak, but the Revs were held to three leaving the bases loaded, and never brought the tying run to the plate the rest of the night.
York starter Zac Cline (0-2) took the loss, charged with six runs (five earned) before leaving the game in the fourth inning with an injury.
Barnstormers starter John Halama (3-3) earned the win pitching into the sixth inning despite giving up all five York runs.
In the final game of the series York will send lefty Chris Cody (8-5, 4.65) to the mound against Lancaster's Matt Wright (2-6, 4.78) Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. in Lancaster. Notes: With the loss tonight, the Revs have lost back-to-back series for the first time since 5/31-6/5 (at SMD, vs. RW). Grimes has hit 10 of his 13 home runs this season since June 17th. Martinez extended his hitting streak to six games. Lancaster has hit six home runs in the first two games of this series.
