Five-Run Tenth Lifts Road Warriors

Waldorf, MD-Road Warriors designated hitter Luis Nieblas drove in five runs and the Road Warriors erupted for five runs in the 10th inning in a 6-1 win over the Blue Crabs on Monday evening in front of 2,495 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium.

For the eighth time in 11 meetings the Road Warriors scored first as a RBI double by Nieblas scored third baseman Melvin Dorta from third to give the Road Warriors a 1-0 lead. Southern Maryland responded in the fourth on a sac-fly by designated hitter Richard Giannotti, which scored first baseman Ben Harrison from first to tie the game.

From there starters Brian Slocum of the Blue Crabs and Christopher Mason of the Road Warriors settled into a pitcher's duel. Slocum turned in one of his best performances of the season as he tossed seven innings of one-run ball while allowing five hits, walking one, and striking out three. Mason, in turn, allowed only the one run on eight hits in six innings of work, while striking out six. All this while entering the game with an 0-3 record with a 9.12 ERA.

The Road Warriors finally broke the tie in the 10th inning as a bloop single to center by shortstop Danny Gonzalez gave the Road Warriors a 2-1 lead. But with the bases loaded and two out, Nieblas stepped up again and blasted a grand slam homer over the leftfield wall to give the Road Warriors a commanding 6-1 lead. It was only Nieblas' second homer of the season.

Nieblas ended the night by going 3-5 with a homer, double, single and five RBI while Dorta chipped in with a 2-5 effort, registering a double and a run scored.

For the Blue Crabs, Harrison, right fielder Adam Godwin, and second baseman Bridger Hunt all had two hits with a double apiece. Godwin also had a stolen base, which was his third of the series.

The win went to Road Warriors closer Adam Thomas (2-5) who fired two shutout innings of relief while striking out three. The loss went to Southern Maryland reliever Steve Palazzolo (6-2) who allowed all five runs in the 10th.

Southern Maryland and the Road Warriors will wrap-up their three-game series at Regency Furniture Stadium on Tuesday with first-pitch scheduled for 11:05 in a special Camp Day start. The Blue Crabs will send righty Eddie Rodriguez (3-3, 4.34 ERA) to the hill against southpaw Luke Massetti (6-7, 5.18 ERA) for the Road Warriors. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
