Lancaster Stormers News Release
Nate Reed and Brooks Hall had reasonably similar nights.
Each made a strong showing in improving his record to 8-3, pitching the Barnstormers to a doubleheader sweep of the Sugar Land Skeeters Saturday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Reed yielded four hits and a run over five innings of work in the opener while walking one and striking out five as the Barnstormers took a 5-2 decision. In game two, Hall allowed six hits and two runs to the Skeeters in a six-inning stint as the Barnstormers won, 8-3, to complete the sweep of the twinbill. Hall did not walk a batter and fanned six.
In each game, the Barnstormers struck early and never surrendered the lead. Blake Gailen hammered his 18th homer of the season to right with one out in the first inning to give the Barnstormers the quick start. Vladimir Frias added a two-run single in the bottom of the second for a 3-0 edge.
Following Barrett Barnes' solo homer to right in the fifth, the Barnstormers stretched the lead with two in the bottom of the inning off Matt Sergey (4-5). Carlos Garcia started the inning with a bunt single and stole second. After Darian Sandford bunted Garcia to third, Tyler Bortnick lifted a pop up to shallow right. First baseman Matt Chavez and second baseman Anthony Giansanti collided on the play, and the ball fell in for a double. Bortnick stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gailen.
Sugar Land loaded the bases against Kevin Munson with one out in the ninth. Barnes drove a sac fly to the warning track for the second out, and the game ended on a busted baserunning play.
In the nightcap, Sandford led off with a single off Konner Wade (6-3) and stole second with one out. Ryan Casteel lined a single to deep right to drive home the game's first run. Jimmy Paredes followed with a double to right center, bringing Casteel home with the second tally of the inning.
Barnes drove in his third run of the night with a single in the top of the third, but the Barnstormers struck for three in the fourth, two on a K.C. Hobson homer, and three more in the third on consecutive RBI singles by Hobson, Frias and Anderson De La Rosa.
The two clubs conclude the series on Sunday afternoon. Jonathan Albaladejo (7-5) will make the start for Lancaster against Sugar Land lefty James Russell (5-3). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 12:45.
NOTES: Sandford stole two bases in the nightcap to tie Quincy Foster's Lancaster career mark with 98...Sandford is two shy of Foster's single season record of 55...Gailen's homer tied him for the league lead with Sugar Land left fielder Courtney Hawkins...Each has 18...Frias was 4-for-6 in the doubleheader to boost his season average to .325...Reed's five strikeouts give him 318 as a Barnstormer, seven short of manager Ross Peeples' Lancaster career record.
