Lancaster Stormers News Release
Baseball is a strange game.
One night after being held to two singles by the Road Warriors, the Lancaster Barnstormers pounded 20 hits, including nine for extra bases, against the same crew for a decisive 13-3 victory in the rubber game of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The win gave the Barnstormers a five-game margin over New Britain in the potential chase for a wild card berth in the Atlantic League and kept them within 5 1/2 of Sugar Land in the second half.
Lancaster assaulted former Barnstormers' right-hander Michael Lee (2-8) in the opening inning. Darian Sandford led off with a single into right and stole second. Josh Bell launched a two-run homer to right center, and Blake Gailen followed with a homer to right. One out later, Jimmy Paredes scalded a single into center. Vladimir Frias capped the inning with a two-run blast to right.
An RBI single by Bell, the second of his four hits, made it 6-0 in the second. Paredes slugged his first Atlantic League homer to lead off the third, and the lead was stretched to 8-0 when Frias and Tyler Bortnick drilled consecutive doubles later in the inning.
Ryan Casteel added a pair of doubles later in the game, and the Barnstormers finished off the attack with Gailen's second homer of the night, a three-run shot off reliever Kelvin Villa in the seventh.
Nate Reed (9-3) was the beneficiary of the support. The left-hander yielded five hits in seven innings, walking one and striking out six.
All three runs scored on a home run by Jose Julio-Ruiz in the fourth inning. Bortnick kept the Road Warriors from getting any closer in the bottom of the fifth with a sprawling play up the middle against Osvaldo Martinez that started a rally killing double play.
The Barnstormers head to New Britain to open a three-game series against the Bees on Friday night. Lancaster will send right-hander Brooks Hall (8-3) to the mound against right-hander Mark Hamburger (6-8). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, starting at 6:15.
