Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

NORWICH, CT --- The first game of a three-game New York-Penn League series for the Vermont Lake Monsters at Dodd Stadium against the Connecticut Tigers scheduled for Friday night was postponed due to inclement weather.

The teams will now play the first game of the series on Saturday night beginning at 7:05 pm and make up Friday's postponement as part of a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 3:30 pm.

The Lake Monsters made a couple of roster moves on Friday with the addition of two pitchers, Koby Gauna and Corey Walter, taken by the Oakland Athletics in the 2014 Draft. After beginning the season without a 2014 draft pick on the opening-day roster, eight of the 31 players currently on the Lake Monsters roster were taken in this year's MLB draft.

Gauna was a 20th-round pick of the A's out of Cal-State Fullerton, where he was a teammate of first-round pick Matt Chapman (currently with the single-A Beloit Snappers). The right-hander was 5-3 with five saves and a 1.64 ERA for the TItans this season with just seven walks and 54 strikeouts in 60 1/3 innings over a team-high 27 appearances. In three seasons at Fullerton, Guana was 14-7 with seven saves and a 2.37 ERA with 22 walks and 118 strikeouts over 182 innings.

Walter was taken in the 28th round by Oakland after a four-year career at West Virginia University, where he was 1-6 with four saves and a 5.01 ERA in 17 games for the Mountaineers in 2014. After earning four saves in 12 relief appearances to start the season, the right-hander went 1-0 with a 3.30 ERA in five starts for WVU to end the season. Over his four seasons at West Virginia, Walter was 14-20 with five saves and a 4.45 ERA in 58 games (31 starts).

Both Guana and Walter began their professional careers with the Arizona League Athletics before being promoted to Vermont. Guana was 0-2 with a 6.14 ERA, allowing five runs on four hits over 7 1/3 innings in three outings for the AZL A's. Walter was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA, allowing just 2 unearned runs on two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings in four appearances.

While Gauna and Walter join the Lake Monsters, pitchers Victor Veliz and Kevin Ferreras have been sent to the Arizona League Athletics. Veliz was 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA in four appearances (two starts), allowing 10 earned runs on 15 hits over 15 innings, and Ferreras was 0-0 with a 5.14 ERA in six relief outings with four runs allowed on seven hits over seven innings.

After the three-game series at Connecticut, the Lake Monsters return to historic Centennial Field for a quick two-game homestand against the Lowell Spinners Monday at 7:05 pm and Tuesday morning at 11:05 am.
