Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
TROY, NY --- Jon Kemmer went 4-for-4 with a walk, two runs, two RBI and a solo homer to lead the Tri-City ValleyCats to a 9-3 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in the 2013 NY-Penn League season opener for both teams Monday night at Bruno Stadium.
The ValleyCats got on the board in the bottom of the first with a run off Vermont starter Gregory Paulino Ãâàbefore Kemmer homered Ãâàwith one out in the second and Tri-City added another run in the inning for a 3-0 lead. The Lake Monsters got their first run of the season on a leadoff home run in the third inning from outfielder Kelvin Rojas.
After Tri-City got an unearned run in the third for a 4-1 advantage, Vermont put together three hits and a pair of RBI groundouts in the fifth to cut the deficit to one. B.J. Boyd led off the innning with a double, advanced to third on a Boog Powell bunt single and Melvin Mercedes followed with an infield single to load the bases. Austin Booker and Ryan Gorton followed with RBI groundouts to cut the lead to 4-3.
But the ValleyCats quickly got those two runs back in the bottom of the fifth off reliever Tyler Johnson on a Ryan Dineen RBI double and Anthony Kemp RBI single. Tri-City later added a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth off reliever Fernand Cruzado. After Vermont's three straight hits to leadoff the fifth, the Lake Monsters had just one more hit over the final five innings on a Rojas one-out infield single in the ninth.
Reliever Kevin Comer (1-0) allowed one hit, one walk and struckout five over the final four innings to pick up the win for Tri-City, while the bottom three hitters in the ValleyCats order combined to go 8-for-13 with two walks and two runs scored. Paulino (0-1) allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits over four innings to take the loss for Vermont, while Michael Soto had a pair of hits for the Lake Monsters.
The loss marked the second straight year that the Lake Monsters have dropped their season opener to Tri-City (lost 10-2 to the ValleyCats at Centennial Field in 2012) and Vermont is now 6-14 in its 20 lidlifters all-time. The two teams will meet in Tri-City again Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:00 pm before the Lake Monsters head to Centennial for their home opener on Thursday against Connecticut.
