Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release

NILES, Ohio--The long wait for baseball in the Mahoning Valley ended tonight, as the Scrappers hosted the Jamestown Jammers at Eastwood Field in the first of three games to open the 2013 season. While the crack of the bats filled the Niles air throughout the contest, it was defense that prevailed through the majority of the ball game. In the 4th inning, Jammers 1st baseman Edwin Espinal flew out to Scrappers right fielder Juan Romero. The Mahoning Valley outfielder then showed off his tremendous arm strength, throwing out Jammers center fielder Harold Ramirez at 2nd base to complete the double play and end the inning.

Romero again showed his defensive exploits the following inning, throwing out Jamestown right fielder Jesus Vasquez, as the Jammer base runner tried to extend a single into a double. It was the top of the seventh inning where things started heading south for the Scrappers. Down 2-0, they loaded the bases with no one out courtesy of a Juan Herrera double, a Josh McAdams single and a Ryan Battaglia walk.

However, a pop up, pick off throw and a strikeout would send Mahoning Valley back to the dugout without scoring a run. With the momentum back on Jamestown's side, the Jammers would plate three more runs, including an RBI double in the 8th by Ramirez, to spoil opening night at Eastwood Field with a 5-0 victory.

Mahoning Valley southpaw Luis Lugo threw five innings of work, allowing five hits and striking out two Jammers in a losing effort. The only run he allowed came on the first New York-Penn League homer of the season, as designated hitter Dan Collins belted one into left-center field to put the Jammers on the board in the 2nd inning.

Jamestown right-hander Isaac Sanchez picked up the victory, throwing five innings of shutout baseball, allowing three hits and striking out five Scrappers.

The Scrappers will try again Tuesday night at Eastwood Field, playing the second of their three game opening series against Jamestown. Hurler Caleb Hamrick will make his Scrappers debut, as he will get the ball to start Tuesday. Call the Scrappers box office at 330-505-0000 to get your tickets.
