IronBirds Shut out in Opening Day Loss

Aberdeen, MD- The IronBirds fell, 5-0 on Opening Day to the Hudson Valley Renegades, Class 'A' Short Season affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. The IronBirds' bats were held in check by Renegades' starter Jordan Harrison.

Harrison held the IronBirds attack silent through six sterling innings, striking out five while allowing only two hits, and the Renegades bullpen pitched three hitless innings to finish off the win.

Initially, the game had all the makings of a pitcher's duel, with IronBirds sophomore righty Sebastian Vader matching Harrison's zeros through the first two innings.

In the third, however, the Renegades broke through, giving Harrison all the run support he would need. Renegades leadoff man Jonathan Quiñonez doubled to the left-field corner to start the inning, and would come around to score two outs later on an RBI groundout by second baseman Ariel Soriano, who would have managed more if not for the sparkling play by his IronBirds counterpart, Bowie native Jeff Kemp. Kemp lunged far to his right, then quickly hopped to his feet and gunned out the speedy Soriano by a step and a half.

In the bottom half of the third, the IronBirds recorded their first hit, a leadoff single to center off the bat of catcher Scott Kalush. Kalush, however, would advance no farther than first base, as Harrison bore down, retiring the next three hitters in succession.

The Renegades managed two more in the fourth, managing two hits around an error by IronBirds third baseman Hector Veloz, who had two on the day.

It was with two away in the bottom of the fourth that the IronBirds would manage their second and final hit, a rocket double to right by the cleanup hitter Veloz. Veloz, however, would be stranded at second base, as Harrison fanned designated hitter Conor Bierfeldt to end the inning.

After a scoreless fifth, Vader was relieved by Michael Joseph, having allowed three runs, two of them earned, on just four hits. The Renegades would tack on two runs off Joseph in the sixth, giving added run support to Harrison, the 22-year-old University of Louisiana-Lafayette product who on this day needed no more than the one run.

Harrison ended his outing with a flourish, retiring nine of the last ten batters he faced before giving way to the bullpen, and two relievers combined to finish the shutout. One bright spot for the IronBirds came from their bullpen, as first-year pro Jimmy Yacabonis pitched two scoreless innings of relief, striking out one while allowing only one hit.

The IronBirds will attempt to even the series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. RHP David Richardson will go for the IronBirds, while the Renegades will counter with LHP Chris Kirsch.
