Lake Erie Scores Early, Takes Series from Y'alls
July 6, 2022 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE, Ky. - The story played out just as it did on Tuesday. Anthony Brocato homered to give the Florence Y'alls a one-run lead, only for it to not be enough to end the losing streak. Brocato's two-run blast pushed Florence ahead 6-5 in the third inning. The Lake Erie Crushers responded with five runs in the fourth, and held on to beat the Y'alls 10-7 at Thomas More Stadium on Wednesday.
Lake Erie used the strength of two innings to clinch a series victory: a five-run first and a five-run third. Starter Jared Cheek allowed the first big frame, reliever Billy Damon the other. Karl Craigie, Kent Klyman, and position player Bryant Flete pitched a combined four scoreless innings afterward.
While his bat was not enough for the Y'alls, Brocato delivered for the home team again, launching two home runs over the left field wall, along with a double and a walk. Brocato's 14 homers are tied for third-most in the Frontier League. Alberti Chavez and Brennan Price collected two hits as well.
A 42-minute rain delay forced a pause in the top of the fifth inning, and pushed the time of the game to over four hours in total. Only one of the game's 17 combined runs came post-delay, with the break seeming to cause hitters to go into a collective funk.
The loss pushes Florence's streak to nine games, a season-long and the longest active streak in the league. This is the first game of the nine that has not been a one-run contest in the eighth inning or later, while it did end up as a save situation for Lake Erie's Sam Curtis.
Florence has one more chance to snap the skid at home before setting off for seven road games. The Y'alls host the Crushers tomorrow at 6:34 p.m. Alex Wagner takes the mound against Lake Erie's Jay Alvarez, who is among the league's best in strikeouts.
