Captain's Log

LAST TIME OUT: The Captains were topped in extras, 7-6 in 10 innings by the Cubs. It was the second consecutive game with free baseball, with Lake County winning 4-2 on Thursday. Joe Naranjo had a 4 for 5 night in yesterday's game, his first four hit game this season. It was the eighth four-hit game by a Captain this season. Lake County had to use six pitchers in total and have left three pitchers in their bullpen who did not pitch yesterday.

IS STAT SO?: Today Joe Naranjo will play in his 84th game, 80th getting the start at first base. The 21-year- old has the most games played of any Captain and the 13th most in the Midwest League. Naranjo also leads Lake County in runs batted in with 41.

BACK IN THE BEND: The Lake County Captains return to South Bend, Indiana where they last played in September of 2021. The Captains took four of the six games, four were decided by just one run, the other two by three runs. Unlike this season, last year Lake County hosted South Bend for six games at Classic Park.

The Captains also won four of the six and three of their four wins were by just one tally.

ON BASE STREAKS: Petey Halpin currently has the longest active streak getting on base in his last 21 games. In 17 of the 21 games, Halpin has gained at least one hit. The 20-year-old has 13 walks compared to only eight strikeouts. Angel Martinez has reached base safely in his last 14 games, smacking four of his eight home runs this season in the span.

PLANEZ'S PLACE IN CAPTAINS HISTORY: Alexfri Planez hit streak came to end on Thursday, July 14th at 22 games. It is the longest streak in the Midwest League this season. The 20-year-old was just two hits away from the longest hitting streak in Lake County history. Francisco Mejia, now a Tampa Bay Ray had a hit in 24 consecutive games with the Captains in 2016. Over the stretch, Planez had a .333/.340/.667 slash line with eight home runs, 23 runs batted in and 32 hits. Planez only walked once during the streak. The streak began on June 14th and ended July 14th.

2021 DRAFT: Five starting pitchers for the Captains' were selected in the 2021 draft. Today's starter Doug Nikhazy, the 58th overall selection, has totaled 63.1 innings over 15 starts allowing 23 earned runs. Tommy Mace was taken in the second round, 69th overall via a competitive balance pick, the right-hander has 45 strikeouts in 54 innings pitched. Aaron Davenport, was the sixth round and 186th overall pick in the 2021 draft, his seven home runs allowed is the lowest among qualifying Captains starters. Cleveland selected Jack Leftwich with the 216th overall pick in the seventh round. Leftwich has not allowed just four runs over 16.1 innings with Lake County. Rodney Boone was an

eighth-round selection, pick number 246, and has made six starts including a complete game shutout against the Lansing Lugnuts on July 2nd.

NEW NAME, SAME GAME: The Lake County Captains are the High-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians.

Cleveland officially changed their name to the Guardians on November 19, 2021.
