December 15, 2016 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
LA Galaxy News Release
CARSON, Calif.- LA Galaxy forward Giovani dos Santos will attend the third edition of the Premios Univision Deportes (Univision Sports Awards) in Miami on Sunday, Dec. 18, broadcast live at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on the Univision Network and UDN. Dos Santos will join the star-studded awards show in Miami as the most nominated athlete with three nominations: MLS Player of the Year, Soccer Goal of the Year, and Mexican National Team Player of the Year.
The two-hour presentation will honor sports figures for their accomplishments on and off the field of play, and across soccer, basketball, baseball, football, boxing, auto racing, extreme sports, tennis and gymnastics, among other sports.
More than 50 athletes and teams have been nominated across 20 categories. Nominees include Argentine soccer icon Lionel Messi, Giovani dos Santos, his Tri teammate and Bayern Leverkusen striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernández, Mexican boxer Saúl "Canelo" Ãlvarez and Chile's National Soccer team.
Dos Santos, 27, in his second season with the Galaxy, tallied 14 goals and 12 assists in 28 MLS Regular Season appearances, with 27 starts, two game-winning goals and two game-winning assists. The Mexico international led a Galaxy offense that scored 54 goals, the most in the MLS Western Conference and the third-most in MLS overall. Dos Santos' 14 goals and 12 assists made him just one of two players in MLS to tally double-digit goals and assists in 2016, joining last year's MLS MVP Sebastian Giovinco of Toronto FC.
The Galaxy forward most recently represented Mexico in two 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying matches in November against the United States and Panama. In October, Giovani also captained his country in matches against New Zealand and Panama, scoring a goal and recording a game-winning assist between the two games. The 27-year-old forward has made 86 appearances for Mexico all time, scoring 15 goals. Awards will be presented to 20 winners for their passion, athletic excellence and their use of sports as an agent for social change.
