OTTAWA - RHP Jordan Kurokawa produced yet another masterful performance and had plenty of run support as the Ottawa Champions beat the Sussex County Miners 7-1 on Friday evening at RCGT Park in Ottawa.

"Another masterpiece by Kurokawa. He just goes out there and does an incredible job," said manager Hal Lanier following the victory. "He beat a good team today. He mixed up his pitches and we came out swinging the bats early."

Kurokawa earned his league-leading ninth win and was mowing down the Miners all game long. He went eight full innings giving up only three hits and no runs. Kurokawa gave up only a single walk and struck out six in another great outing for the rookie hurler.

"I'm just doing my job," said Kurokawa. "Everything was working tonight. It's hard to find nights when everything is working, but tonight was one of those nights. Anytime you can take down a top team is huge."

RHP Andrew Cooper pitched the ninth inning and conceded the only Miners run of the ballgame.

The Champions provided run support from the outset, as CF Chase Harris was driven by a DH Sebastien Boucher sacrifice fly in the first inning. RF Steve Brown followed that up with his team-leading eighth home run to give Ottawa an early 2-0 advantage.

The Champs took it to Sussex County starter RHP Michael Wagner. They got runs in each of their first four frames, chasing Wagner after only 3.1 innings pitched. RHP Martire Garcia came in and was able to keep Ottawa off the board through the rest of the game, but the damage had already been done.

LF Brian Portelli hit his first homer as a Champion in the second, with 1B Vinny Guglietti scoring on the no-doubter to left field. Guglietti got an RBI himself the next inning by driving in Steve Brown.

Brown would end the day 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Harris and Guglietti also had multi-hit performances.

The Champions will look to top the Miners again tomorrow, Saturday, August 4 at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all Champions home games are available at www.ottawachampions.com, in-person at the RCGT Park box office, or by calling 613-745-BALL (2255).
