Kupaks named to CHL All-Star Game

ALBUQUERQUE – The Central Hockey League announced today that New Mexico Scorpions defenseman Arturs Kupaks has been selected to represent the Southern Conference as a reserve as the league's All-Star Game on Thursday, Jan. 23. in Oklahoma City.

Kupaks, 29, leads all Scorpions and is sixth among all CHL defensemen with 30 points (8 goals-22 assists). The 6-foot, 190-pound Riga, Latvia native is the only blueliner with two shorthanded goals this season. He played in the 2000 Western Professional Hockey League All-Star Game in Amarillo as a member of the Lubbock Cotton Kings and was named Defenseman of the Year following that season.

"We're happy that Arturs has been recognized for his efforts," said Scorpions Head Coach/Assistant General Manager Bill McDonald. "He is a strong offensive defenseman and an important part of our team. We hope he is a main contributor to our success in the second half of the season.

Kupaks and the rest of the Scorpions take to the road this Friday, Jan. 10 to visit the Amarillo Gorillas for the second time in a week. Faceoff is at 6:11 p.m. MST. The game can be heard on SportsRadio 610 The Sports Animal beginning with Scorpions Pregame at 5:55 p.m. The Scorpions return to Lubbock on Saturday, Jan. 11 for a 6 p.m. MST game against the Cotton Kings.

The next home game is Wednesday, Jan. 15 when the Scorpions face the Corpus Christi Rayz for the only time this season. Faceoff is 7:05 p.m. The Scorpions will debut their third "gold" jerseys for the first time this season in that game, being dubbed "Frank Bowl I" as WD Sports owns the Scorpions and last month assumed ownership of the Rayz.
