Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Somerset Patriots drilled 16 hits, including 14 singles on Wednesday evening to support a brilliant start by right-hander David Kubiak, handing the Lancaster Barnstormers an 8-1 loss in the series finale at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Combined with a 4-3 Sugar Land victory at Long Island, the Barnstormers' division lead has been whittled down to one game with 15 remaining in the first half.
The Patriots jumped on Tommy Shirley (3-2) right away as the first four batters of the night reached base on three singles and a walk as one run scored. A second crossed the plate as Yovan Gonzalez grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.
Two more runs scored in the third. Alfredo Rodriguez and Craig Massey knocked consecutive singles into center and moved up on a sacrifice bunt. With the infielders at the edge of the grass, Aaron Dudley rolled a single through the shortstop hole scoring both.
The bleeding continued in the fourth with three more singles and a run crossing on a single by Endy Chavez, who recorded his seventh RBI of the series.
Mike Fransoso's double inside the first base bag, the only extra base hit of the 13 allowed by Shirley, chased the left-hander in the fifth. That double gave the Patriots a 6-1 lead. Another runner scored on a force play grounder after Garrett Granitz entered the game. Somerset's final run was an unearned tally in the ninth.
Kubiak (3-0), much like Duane Below on Tuesday, was nicked early but settled down and controlled the game. The right-hander yielded a run in the first as Blake Gailen doubled, took third on an infield single by Ryan Casteel and scored on K.C. Hobson's sac fly to center.
Lancaster did not get another runner into scoring position until the eighth inning.
Kubiak walked two and struck out eight in 7 1/3 innings. Lancaster managed only four hits off him and two more off the Patriots bullpen.
The Barnstormers host the Long Island Ducks in a four-game weekend series at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Brooks Hall (3-2) will match up against Matt Larkins (5-1) in the series opener at 7:00 on Thursday evening. Fans may tune into BRC 11 or the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, starting with the first pitch.
NOTES: Gailen's RBI streak ended at 10 games, but he extended his hitting streak to 10 with the double in the first...It is Lancaster's longest hitting streak of the season...Granitz set his season high with four strikeouts...He has thrown seven straight scoreless innings...Casteel had his 14th two-hit game of the season.
