KPS game earns national honor
August 29, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings, proud members of the United Hockey League, announce that the Kalamazoo Public Schools (KPS) and the K-Wings have received a national award from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA).
The NSPRA recognized KPS and the K-Wings with their Golden Achievement Award, which is given yearly for exemplary public relations activity. The award was given by the KSPRA after judges critiqued the project using specific criteria. The judges examined each of the nominees using four steps; analysis of need, planning to meet the need, execution and communication of the program; and the formal evaluation of the project.
"We are very proud of KPS Day," said Executive Director of Communications for the Kalamazoo Public Schools Alex Lee. "This day is more than just a game; it's a chance for our kids to use the skills they have already learned and to see what they need to achieve to make their dreams a reality."
Besides the game itself, the K-Wings go to all KPS Elementary Schools with their players and read to the students during the school districts annual celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday. The K-Wings also have students submit artwork for the KPS Day Program Cover Contest, with the winner of the contest having their artwork on the game day cover. Students also are selected to shadow Wings Stadium/Kalamazoo Wings employees during the game, as a career building experience.
This is the second award given for KPS Day, which has doubled in size over the past two years. Last season, the Michigan School Public Relations Association honored the day at the state level.
The 2005-06 school year started this morning and the KPS invited Vice President/General Manager Paul L. Pickard, Assistant General Manager Wade Welsh, Director of Public Relations/Broadcaster Mike Modugno and everyone's favorite mascot Slappy to be celebrity greeters and welcome the students back for the new year.
The Third Annual KPS Day will be March 1, 2006, as the K-Wings host the Port Huron Flags at 10:30 a.m. at Wings Stadium.
For more information about the NSPRA Golden Achievement Award or the Third Annual KPS Day, please contact Director of Public Relations/Broadcaster Mike Modugno at (269) 349-9772 extension 220.
