Komets Strike Thunder 7-3; Can Claim Championship Saturday

Fort Wayne, IN -- The Komets took a commanding 3-0 lead in the CHL Presidents' Cup Finals best-of-7 series with a 7-3 victory over the visiting Wichita Thunder Thursday in front of 7,105 Fort Wayne faithful at the Memorial Coliseum.

The Komets jumped out front with two goals in 34 seconds at 3:22 and 3:54 of the first period on markers by Kaleigh Schrock and Bryant Molle. Wichita's Aaron Davis pulled the Thunder within one at 9:43 to send the game into the first period with Fort Wayne leading 2-1.

The Komets started the third period scoring their three quickest goals of the playoffs as Daniel Maggio (PP), Colin Chaulk (PP) and Leo Thomas all connected within a time span of 1:33 to give the K's a 5-1 bulge. The Thunder rolled back with a pair by Matt Summers to close the gap to 5-3 by the conclusion of the second frame.

Fort Wayne's Chaulk scored his second of the night at 2:24 of the third before Schrock netted his second of the match at 5:06 to seal a 7-3 victory. Komet goaltender Nick Boucher earned his fifth straight win stopping 26 of 29 shots while the Thunder's Bryan Hogan suffered the loss allowing seven goals on 41 shots.

The Komets have a chance to cap their 60th anniversary season with the franchise's ninth league championship when Game 4 faces off Saturday at 8:15pm ET in Fort Wayne. If Game 5 is needed, it will be played in Fort Wayne Monday, May 7 at 7:30pm. Games 6 and 7, if needed are scheduled to held at Wichita Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12.
