MOLINE, Ill. - Artem Podshendyalov scored one goal and assisted on the Fort Wayne Komets' other two as the Komets defeated the host Quad City Mallards 3-2 Friday night. With the loss, the Mallards drop to 23-18-1 (47 points).
A pair of second period Fort Wayne goals would prove decisive. Brett Smith's wrist shot from the left wing boards snapped a 1-1 tie at 13:18 of the second. With just one second left in the period, Chris Auger finished off a 2-on-1 rush to stretch the gap to 3-1.
"Any goal at the end of a period is tough to swallow," said Mallards coach and general manager David Bell. "We needed to just kill the clock there and live to fight another day in the next period."
Auger's goal stood up as the game winner after Obi Aduba scored the Mallards' second power play goal of the game from the left wing circle with just less than three minutes left in the third period.
The Komets had first taken the lead when Podshendyalov wheeled out from behind the Mallard net to snap a scoreless deadlock at 15:48 of the first period. That advantage lasted just 53 seconds before the Mallards' Matt Duffy evened the score at one with a blast from the blue line. The Mallards, however, would come up just short when forced to battle from behind a second time.
The Mallards return to action on home ice tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. against the Bloomington Blaze. The first 1,000 fans age 13 and over through the doors will receive free Mallards replica jerseys courtesy of 97X's Dwyer & Michaels.
