Komets Rifle off Five Unanswered Goals in 5-2 Victory

Fort Wayne, IN- Firing on all cylinders, the Fort Wayne Komets defended its home ice with a 5-2 victory over the Kalamazoo Wings.

A scoreless contest late in the first period turned dramatically in favor of the Komets, after forward Luciano Aquino (18th,19th) added two goals in a span of 38 seconds to give Fort Wayne a 2-0 lead.

Fort Wayne pulled away in the second period scoring twice more. Matt Reynolds struck 39 seconds into the period, which led head coach Brian Curran to pull goaltender Jeremy Symington for Brad Smith.

Smith stopped 9 of 10 in the relief, with his only blemish in the second coming off a Konstantin Shafranov (6th) rebound.

Shafranov (7th) recorded his second of the game midway through the third period to give the Komets a 5-0 lead.

Not rolling over, Kory Karlander (18th) and Nick Bootland each lit the lamp for the K-Wings in the final stanza. Both players extended their point streaks to a K-Wings' season high 10 games. Karlander also extended his K-Wings' season high assist streak to nine games.

Kalamazoo finishes their three-game road swing with a return engagement tomorrow Sunday, January 6th at 5 p.m. against Fort Wayne.

Following the road trip, the K-Wings will return home to Wings Stadium to commence a three-game home stand on Wednesday, January 9th to battle the Port Huron Icehawks at 7 p.m.
