Komets Head West for Week 5

Fort Wayne, IN-- The Komets travel west for week number 5 of the 2017-18 ECHL campaign. Wednesday the Komets face the Eagles at Colorado at 9:05pm Fort Wayne time. Then the K's move into Utah to skate a pair of back-to-back games Friday and Saturday against the Grizzlies.

The defending ECHL champion Eagles are 7-3-0 for 14 points and second place in the Mountain division after 10 games. It will be the first trip to Colorado since the 2015-16 season when the Komets split a pair of games at the Budweiser Events Center (5,289) March 2 and 6, 2016. The Eagles are 1-3-0 in their last four outings and are coming off a 7-3 loss at Idaho Saturday.

Utah resides in fourth place in the Mountain division with a 5-5-2 record and 12 points after 12 games. The last time the Komets traveled to Utah was for a pair of games in the second round of the 2016 ECHL playoffs on May 4 and 6. The Komets swept the Grizzlies 4-0 in the series. The last time Fort Wayne traveled to Utah for a regular season game was in the old International Hockey League on Feb. 5, 1999, a 3-2 Fort Wayne win over the old Grizzlies. The Komets are 33-31-7-3 against Utah (Salt Lake City) teams all-time since the very first meeting Nov. 3, 1984 in the IHL. The visiting Salt Lake Golden Eagles clipped the Komets 4-3. Utah is unbeaten in regulation the last four games (2-0-2) and is 5-1-2 in the last eight. The Grizzlies are idle until Fort Wayne visits the Maverik Center (10,200) for a pair Friday and Saturday.

About last week -- The Komets were 1-2-0 for the week gaining two points for a 3-3-1 record and seven points after seven games. Friday the Komets were doubled-up 4-2 by the visiting Adirondack Thunder in the Thunder's only visit of the season and the first visit by an Adirondack team since the Frostbite were in town for a United Hockey League game Dec. 16, 2005. Saturday the Komets rebounded with a 7-1 rout of the Quad City Mallards in Fort Wayne. The victory snapped Fort Wayne's winless skid at three games. Goaltender Garrett Bartus earned his first win of the season making 26 saves on 27 shots. Defenseman Jason Binkley recorded his second career four-point game (1g, 3a). Sunday the Komets dropped a 6-3 affair to the Kalamazoo Wings in their first road trip of the season.

Notables -- Marc-Olivier Roy had points in two of the three games over the weekend to lead the Komets with 10 points (4g, 6a).....Rookie Artur Tyanulin had points in each game of the week for points in each of his first four ECHL career games (4g, 4a) and a four-game point streak including a three-game assist streak (4a).....Garrett Thompson scored goals in two of the three games of the week (3g) to lead the Komets with five goals after seven games. Thompson also notched his 100th pro point (regular season and playoffs) Sunday when he scored Fort Wayne's first goal of the game.....Jason Binkley has points in five of his first seven games and leads Fort Wayne defensemen while ranking second among ECHL defensemen with eight assists and nine points..... Binkley and blue-line mate Cody Sol lead the Komets with +9.

Special K's -- For the week, the Komets were 3/12 on the power play (25%) and rank fourth in the ECHL with a power play rating of 20.8% (5/24). The Komets were 13/14 on the penalty kill and rank fifth in the league with a 90.0% penalty kill rating (27/30).
