The 2019 Open Cup continues tonight at Exploria Stadium. City meets rivals New York City FC tonight in the Quarterfinals with kickoff set for 7:30 pm and coverage on ESPN+. City is here by way of knocking out New England in extra time. New York City FC has reached this stage by defeating D.C. United. Here is what you need to know about City's opponent:
Key Transactions
The big news out of NYCFC this offseason was the loss of David Villa and many wondered how the Bronx based club would replace their Spaniard goal scorer. The answer, Alexandru Mitrita. The 23-year-old Romanian joined as a Designated Player from Universitatea Craiova where he tallied 12 goals and four assists in his 16 appearances in the 2018/19 season. Other notable additions to the NYCFC roster include U.S. Youth International Keaton Parks who joins on loan from Benfica and former Lion Tony Rocha who was acquired through trade. On the flip side, NYCFC parted ways with names like Rodney Wallace, Yangel Herrera, Saad Abdul-Salaam and Jo Inge Berget.
Missing Pieces
New York City FC will not be coming into tonight's match at full strength. On top of having to play on Sunday like City, New York City FC could be without James Sands (broken arm), Tony Rocha (hamstring injury), Heber (hamstring injury), Alexandru Mitrita (hamstring injury) and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi (ankle injury).
Head-to-head
The Lions hold a 5-5-4 record against NYCFC all-time, with all of those matches coming in MLS play. The two sides have met three times already this season with City topping NYCFC in the Orlando City Invitational during preseason and the two regular-season meetings ending in draws.
