Knights Win Slugfest Over Chiefs 10-7

May 3, 2009 - International League (IL1)
Charlotte Knights News Release

FORT MILL, S.C. - May 3, 2009 - The Knights scored the go ahead runs in their 10-7 win over Syracuse on one of the most unusual plays you will ever see. Outfielder Miguel Negron attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt and ended up scoring on the play.

With the game tied at 7 in the bottom of the 8th inning and with runners on 1st and 2nd base, Negron layed down a bunt toward third base. Syracuse pitcher Jesus Colome fielded the ball and threw to third base. The throw went over the third baseman's head and went all the way to the left field corner. The throws allowed both runners to score and the speedy Negron beat the throw home.

Although it was scored a fielder's choice with and a four base throwing error by Colome, it looked like an inside the park home run that came from a bunt.

Lost in the chaos of the play was the fact that the Knights did set a season high in hits with 16 and hit 3 home runs in the game. Right hander Kelvin Jimenez made his first start of the season and was effective through four innings allowing just a run off of three hits.

First baseman Andy Phillips continues to do well at the plate. He went 3 for 5 with a

home run and is now hitting .345 on the season.

The Knights play a brief two game set in Durham before returning to face the Bulls on Wednesday at 11:15 AM. RHP Carlos Torres (2-1) who is leading the league in ERA at 1.17 starts for the Knights tomorrow.
