Knights unable to outrun Bisons stampede

FORT MILL, SC- The Charlotte Knights held off the threatening weather, but they were unable to outrun the stampede of the Buffalo Bisons as they fell 8-4. Tonight's loss was the first during the seasons 6 meetings between to two teams.

Bisons right fielder, Franklin Gutierrez, got things started in the top of the first with a double down the left field line. Gutierrez advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Joe Inglett before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Garko.

The Knights retaliated in the bottom of the first when Andy Gonzalez scored on an RBI single by first baseman, Casey Rogowski.

Andy Marte hit a solo home run in the top of the second to give the lead back to the Bisons. Inglett increased the score 3-1 with an RBI single to right field.

In the bottom of the second, Charlotte designated hitter, Bobby Smith, hit a double in his first at bat with the Knights. Smith was able to score on a double to center field by Ruben Rivera, narrowing the score 3-2.

Bisons center fielder, Ben Francisco, led the stampede into the third inning with a two run homer over the left field wall. Francisco scored again in the fifth on an RBI double by Jake Gautreau.

The Bisons increased their lead again in the sixth, after Jason Dubois hit a two run double, making the score 8-2.

The Knights attempted a late comeback in the bottom of the ninth after Chris Stewart hit a double to left field before advancing to third on a single by Jerry Owens. Stewart scored on an RBI single by Gonzalez, narrowing the gap 8-3. Owens made it home on an infield out by Josh Fields, putting the Knights within four before Tony Torcato ended the game with a fly ball to left field.

Knights starting pitcher, Chad Bentz, who started in replace of Sean Tracey who was recalled by the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday, gave up five runs in four innings . Bentz was relieved in the fifth by Nate Cornejo, who gave up three runs in 1.1 innings of work.

Bisons starting pitcher, Jeremy Sowers, improved his record to 7-1 after pitching seven innings while allowing seven hits, giving up two runs and earning six strikeouts.

Knuckleball specialist, Charlie Haeger will be on the mound tomorrow for Charlotte, facing off against Bisons starting pitcher, Hyang-Nam Choi. Game time tomorrow is 2:15 p.m.
