Charlotte Knights News Release

(Fort Mill, SC) - Scott Carroll (3-5, 5.19) allowed just three hits over seven solid innings against his former team, Jared Mitchell had a two-run triple in a four-run sixth inning, and the Charlotte Knights beat the Louisville Bats 6-2 on Tuesday in the opening game of a four-game series from Knights Stadium. With the win, combined with a Norfolk Tides' loss, the Knights saw their lead in the International League South Division rise to a season-high 10 games.

It was on July 9 when Scott Carroll was released from the Cincinnati Reds organization. The Kansas City, MO native posted a 2-3 record with a 5.90 ERA in 25 games for the Louisville Bats earlier this season On Tuesday, in the opening game of a four-game series against his former team, Carroll showed the Bats just what they are missing.

Carroll allowed two runs and two walks over seven innings en route to his first win as a Charlotte Knights pitcher. He struck-out five batters and threw 91 pitches. The 27-year-old has now made two starts two against his former 'mates this season and each time he's thrown seven innings. On Tuesday, he turned those seven innings into a win.

Offensively, the Knights received some help before the game. Charlotte welcomed former Seattle infielder Jose Lopez to the team and also saw the return of fan-favorite Jordan Danks. Both played a key role in Tuesday's outcome.

Charlotte (72-53) got on the scoreboard in the first inning against Louisville starter Sean Gallagher (9-9, 4.90) courtesy of a Lopez RBI single to tie the game at 1-1. Lopez later came up big again for the Knights in his debut.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Lopez singled to load the bases for the Knights, who trailed the Bats at that point by a score of 2-1. Josh Phegley then came through with a sacrifice-fly RBI to tie the game at 2-2. Then it was Mitchell's turn.

Facing reliever Travis Webb, Mitchell ripped a go-ahead two-run triple to make it a 4-2 Knights lead. Mitchell's triple was the first of the season for him as a member of the Knights - but 13th overall. At the time of his promotion to the Knights from Double-A Birmingham on July 24, Mitchell was the Southern League leader in triples with 12. He still leads the league.

Charlotte tacked on another run on a Tyler Saladino RBI single in the sixth frame., which made it a 5-2 game.

In the eighth inning, Danks singled home a run to make it 6-2 game and give the Knights a nice four-run cushion. In the ninth, he made a great catch over the center field wall to end the game and give Charlotte their fourth-straight victory.

The two teams will continue their series on Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for 7:15 p.m. RHP Charlie Shirek is expected to take the mound for the Knights and RHP Chad Reineke for Louisville. Gates open at 6:00 p.m.
