Indians Fall 3-1 in Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. --Right-handed starter Kyle McPherson impressed again in his second career start for Indianapolis but couldn't gather requisite run support in an eventual 3-1 loss as the Indianapolis Indians fell to the Rochester Red Wings at Frontier Field.

McPherson allowed two runs in the ballgame, the lone earned run on a home run by RF Matt Carson that led off the fourth inning. That home run proved to be McPherson's undoing, doubling a lead Rochester had built on a third-inning unearned run that scored when 3B Ray Chang, who reached on an error to lead off the frame, crossed the plate on a groundout by DH Brian Dinkleman.

It was an unfortunate loss for McPherson, who -- as per usual -- was around the strikezone all night, allowing just two walks while striking out six Red Wings. McPherson (5.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 HR) is now 0-1 with a 1.59 ERA in two starts for Indianapolis.

The Indians mustered their lone run of the ballgame in a ninth-inning rally that eventually came up short. With two outs, 2B Anderson Hernandez hit a double to left field, his ninth of the season, before scoring on a groundball single by C Tony Sanchez to pull the Indians within two runs of the Red Wings.

Sanchez was replaced by PR Eric Fryer, who advanced to second on defensive indifference before LF Drew Sutton drew a walk to put the potential tying runs on base. A strikeout by RHP Anthony Slama ended the would-be rally and the ballgame, however, garnering Slama (0.1 IP, 1 K) his 10th save of the season.

Picking up the win for Rochester was RHP David Bromberg, who improved to 1-2 on the season. Bromberg (4.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K) took the mound in relief of RHP P.J. Walters when the rehabbing Walters (2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) was unable to make it through the third inning.

Rochester picked up an insurance run in the seventh inning on Carson's second RBI of the game as he combined with 1B Chris Parmelee on back-to-back doubles. Carson finished the contest 2-for-4 with a double (23), home run (14), two RBI and a run scored.

Despite the loss, Indianapolis saw its magic number for clinching a playoff berth fall to 11 as the Columbus Clippers fell 6-3 to the visiting Durham Bulls on Tuesday night.

Indianapolis (74-50) is expected to send LHP Justin Wilson (9-5, 3.88) to the mound in Wednesday's 7:05 p.m. game two. Rochester (63-61) will likely counter with RHP Esmerling Vasquez (7-5, 3.10).
