Knights Edged By Houston In Another Shootout
October 20, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Abbotsford Heat News Release
Omaha, NE - On the ice, it must have felt like the movie "Groundhog Day". For the second straight game, the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights and the Houston Aeros played a game that featured each team coming from behind, a shootout and an Aeros' win. The Aeros beat the Knights 4-3 on Thursday night at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. Tomi Maki had a goal and an assist for the Knights, and Erik Westrum scored the deciding goal in the sixth round of the shootout.
Unlike Tuesday's game, the Aeros took the first lead. Petr Taticek opened the scoring with his first goal of the season at 7:42. One period later, Erik Reitz fired home a slapshot on the powerplay to put the Aeros up 2-0.
The Knights answered back less than two minutes later. First, Richie Regehr beat goalie Miroslav Kopriva with booming shot for his first goal of the year. It came on a powerplay off assists from Maki and Mark Giordano at 9:38. Just 50 seconds later, the Knights tied it when Cam Severson flew down the left wing and wristed the puck through the feet of Kopriva.
Late in the second period, Omaha took its first lead of the game when Maki completed a nifty tic-tac-toe passing play with Brandon Prust and Dave Moss for his second goal of the year. The Knights took a 3-2 lead into the second intermission.
The game stayed that way until late in the third period when Kurtis Foster beat a screened Brent Krahn with a point shot to make it 3-3. It stayed that way through overtime in spite of an Omaha powerplay. In the shootout, each team scored on its third and fifth shots, forcing the sudden death sixth round. Westrum, the second leading scorer in the AHL, had been kept off the scoreboard but beat Krahn with a low wrist shot. Darren Lynch was then turned aside on the ensuing shot for the Knights giving the Aeros a 4-3 win.
The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights are now 2-2-0-2 this season. They'll travel to Grand Rapids, MI to face the Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday, October 22nd at 6:00 p.m. CT and then face the Iowa Stars in Des Moines on Tuesday, October 25th before returning home to host the Chicago Wolves on Friday, October 28th at 7:00 p.m. Both games can be heard in Omaha on 1420 AM and on the web at omahaaksarbenknights.com with the voice of the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights, Dave Ahlers. A live video feed is also available on the Knights' web site by clicking the link for B2 Networks.
Tickets for all home games are on sale at the Civic Auditorium box office, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets may be purchased by calling 422-1212 or at Ticketmaster.com.
