Charlotte Knights News Release
(Fort Mill, SC) -- Thursday night was the series finale between the Charlotte Knights and the Toledo Mud Hens after a marathon Wednesday that produced two walk-off wins for the Knights. Charlie Leesman pitched well for Charlotte but the club could not muster enough offense as they fell 2-0 to split the series 2-2 at Knights Stadium.
The Knights (17-17) loaded the bases in the first inning but were not able to push any runs across. Drew Garcia, who was called up earlier in the day from Double-A Birmingham, walked and Dan Johnson followed with a base hit to right field to put runners at the corners with one away. A walk to Hector Gimenez loaded the bases but Josh Phegley popped out to first and Jordan Danks grounded out to second to end the inning.
Toledo got all the offense they would need in the fourth when former-Knight Brad Eldred hit a long home run high over the right field wall. It was his second of the series and 15th of the season. Eric Patterson followed with a triple to right and Omir Santos drove him in with a sharp liner past Tyler Kuhn at third.
Leesman (2-4, 3.09) pitched well for Charlotte in the loss. He went seven innings and only gave up the two runs while striking out seven. Johnson was on base three out of four times and Ozzie Martinez was 2-4 with two doubles.
Charlotte will start a four-game series with the Buffalo Bisons (Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets) on Friday night at 7:15 p.m. The Bisons are 20-14 on the season and in second place in the IL North Division.
