ROSTER NEWS: The Minnesota Twins last night optioned third baseman Danny Valencia to Triple-A Rochester and designated left-handed pitcher Matt Maloney for assignment. To replace Valencia and Maloney on the roster, the Twins have recalled outfielder Darin Mastroianni and selected the contract of right-handed pitcher P.J. Walters from Rochester. Walters was scheduled to pitch tomorrow at Syracuse.
a Valencia spent parts of the 2009 and 2010 seasons with the Red Wings. Maloney, in his first year in the Twins' system, has spent parts of the last 5 seasons in the International League with Louisville.
SPLITSVILLE: The Red Wings have split each of their first three 4-game series and need a win today to keep the trend going. (Rochester had a 4th 4-game series at Buffalo April 27-30, but it was shortened to 3 games due to a rainout.) The Wings last lost a 4-game series August 22-25, 2011, when they were swept at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Yankees).
a The Red Wings are 6-13 at McCoy Stadium since the start of the 2010 season, including a 3-5 mark in 2010 and a 2-6 mark in 2011. Rochester went 5-3 in Pawtucket in 2009.
LET'S RE-LIVE THAT OPENING DAY MAGIC: Since scoring a season-high 7 runs on Opening Day, April 5 at Syracuse, the Red Wings have been held to 5 runs or less in each of their last 31 games. In the 6 contests they've scored at least 5 runs, the Wings are 5-1. They are 9-17 in their other 26 games.
a The Red Wings have scored an International League-low 93 runs, 21 fewer than the next closest team: Lehigh Valley (Phillies) with 114. The league leader is Pawtucket, which has plated 171 runs.
BACK IN THE SADDLE: With Pedro Florimon's solo homer Tuesday and Joe Thurston's solo shot last night, the Red Wings have homered in 2 straight games. With a homer today, the Wings would match their season high with a homer in 3 consecutive games from April 8-10. Rene Rivera, Brian Dozier, and Brian Dinkelman turned the trick during the season's first week. Prior to homering in back-to-back contests, the Wings went a season-high 8 straight games without a home run. Rochester has yet to hit 2 home runs in a game.
a The Red Wings have hit 12 homers overall, tied with Durham (Rays) for the fewest in the league.
THE 'PEN IS MIGHTIER: The Red Wings bullpen has worked 9.0 consecutive scoreless innings over its last 3 games, a stretch that began in the 7th inning Monday at Pawtucket. In fact, Rochester relievers have tossed scoreless relief in 6 of its last 7 games beginning May 2, allowing just 3 runs (all earned) in 25.2 innings for a 1.05 ERA in that time.
a Anthony Slama has tossed 10.0 consecutive scoreless innings in his last 8 appearances. Deolis Guerra, meanwhile, has worked 9.0 straight scoreless innings in 4 games since joining the Red Wings April 28 from Double-A New Britain.
a Including 7.0 straight scoreless innings over his last 4 appearances with New Britain, Guerra has worked 16.0 consecutive scoreless innings overall, a stretch the started April 15. He hasn't given up a run since April 12 at New Hampshire (Blue Jays).
CLOSING THE DOOR: Three different Red Wings pitchers have recorded at least one save: Casey Fien, Tyler Robertson, and Anthony Slama. In 2011, a healthy 8 Wings hurlers notched at least one save, including one by Slama. The Red Wings saves leader in 2011 was Jim Hoey with 9. Slama in 2012 already has 7 saves, 3 shy of posting the most saves in a season since he himself closed 17 ballgames in 2010. The club record for most saves in a season is 35 by Bobby Korecky in 2007. Slama is tied for 3rd in the IL with his 7 saves.
a Rochester in 2012 has a 3.89 bullpen ERA overall and is 13-for-14 in save opportunities.
THIS DATE IN BASEBALL HISTORY: In 1999, Nomar Garciaparra hits 2 grand slams in a 12-4 win vs. Seattle, becoming the first Red Sox to slug a pair of grand slams in one game since Rudy York in 1946...in 1961, the Twins trade Ernie Oravetz and cash considerations to the Dodgers in exchange for Joe Altobelli and Ed Palmquist...in 2000, the Twins rally from an 8-1 deficit vs. Cleveland, including 3 runs in the 9th, to win 10-9...it was the largest comeback in Twins history.
