Knights Come Up Short in Extra Innings

FORT MILL, S.C. - The Charlotte Knights lost in 12 innings to the Louisville Bats 4-2 at Knights Stadium. Knights' starter Joe Bisenius pitched 5.0 scoreless innings fanning seven in the process.

The Bats took a three run lead in the 12th inning after Dave Sappelt and Yonder Alonso each walked to start the inning. Sappelt then broke the scoreless tie by scoring on an RBI-double from Louisville's Devin Mesoraco. The Bats added two more runs on an RBI double from Todd Frazier.

The Knights had an opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. A Lastings Milledge single followed by a Josh Phegley bunt single and an intentional walk to Andrew Garcia loaded the bases with one out. Eduardo Escobar then grounded in to a double play to end the inning and send the game into extras.

The Knights scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when outfielder Dayan Viciedo singled to get on base. Viciedo reached third on a Lastings Milledge base hit and later scored on a Josh Phegley RBI-single. The Knights would add another in the 12th inning on a RBI groundout from Alejandro De Aza.

The game lasted three hours and forty-one minutes and the two teams combined to use 11 pitchers. Louisville's Tom Cochran earned the win and is now 7-2 on the season with Nick Christiani earning his 7th save. The Knights' Miguel Socolovich took the loss and now has a record of 3-2.

Charlotte and Louisville will play the series final tomorrow afternoon at 2:15 PM at Knights Stadium. The Knights will start reigning International League Pitcher of the Week Matt Zaleski and the Bats will counter with RHP Edinson Volquez.
