Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves broke the hearts of the Tides 4-3 in the second straight extra-inning game at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA, on Saturday night. Gwinnett pushed its winning streak, which bridged the all star break, to five games with the 11th inning victory. The G-Braves (53-41) remain in first place in the International League South at 1.5 games ahead of Durham, who won tonight. The Tides (35-59) remain in last place in the division with the loss.
It Was Over When: Diory Hernandez was the walk-off hero for the second night in a row, notching the clutch game-winning single again in the 11th inning for Gwinnett - almost the exact situation as last night's walk-off win. With Ruben Gotay (who sent the game into extras), Stefan Gartrell and Mauro Gomez filling the bases, Hernandez scalded a 3-1 pitch into the outfield for the win.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: Starting LHP Mike Minor didn't have his normally lethal stuff tonight, throwing 109 pitches including 67 strikes in just 6.0 innings. He allowed 8 H, 2 BB but still struck out 7 in the no decision. RHP's Juan Abreu and Jairo Asencio went a combined 4.0 scoreless IP with 9 K's in relief. RHP Steven Shell (2-1) got one out in the 11th to earn the win.
At the plate: 2B Gotay went 2-for-5 with a 2 RBI single to send the game into extra innings. SS Hernandez was 1-for-5 with his RBI and 1B Gomez was also 1-for-5 with a runner knocked in.
The Opposition:
On the Mound: Norfolk starting LHP Brian Matusz went 7.0 IP, allowing just 3 H, 2 BB with 8 K's in a no decision. LHP Cole McCurry (1-1) went 1.2 IP and allowed 2 R/ER in defeat.
At the Plate: Tides CF Henson was 2-for-6 with an RBI and a SB, while SS Rojas was 3-for-3 on the night.
On Deck: The G-Braves take on the Tides in the final game of this four game series on the current eight game homestand, Sunday night at 7:05 p.m. Gwinnett will send out RHP Todd Redmond (6-8, 3.25) against Norfolk LHP Chris George (3-4, 4.79). The game can be heard on the voice of the Gwinnett Braves, WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM. 1 Millionth Fan Update: The G-Braves now stand at 996,188 fans that have walked through the gates of Coolray Field in the team's third year in Lawrenceville. The countdown is on for the soon-to-be-picked 1 Millionth Fan (now just 3,812 fans away) , who will receive two free Suntrust Club tickets to an upcoming Atlanta Braves game, a limousine ride to that contest, two G-Braves season tickets for the rest of this season and all of 2012 (including free parking), a personalized jersey, a team signed bat, a free suite upgrade, a commemorative plaque on the Suite level's Historical Wall and more prizes from Gwinnett's sponsors and founding partners.
