Durham Bulls News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) Durham got its first win after the All-Star break, 11-8 over Pawtucket on Saturday.
After a pair of 3-2 losses, Durham took a 7-1 lead in the fourth with a seven-run frame. That tied the largest output for Durham in a single inning this year. However, Pawtucket answered with a six-run fourth against Matt Torra and R.J. Swindle. It culminated with a Lars Anderson two-out grand slam off Swindle to tie the score.
Pawtucket then loaded the bases an inning later against Ryan Reid with none out. Reid, a New Englander who just rejoined the team from Double-A Montgomery worked out the frame without allowing a run. He got Che-Hsuan Lin to ground into a 5-2 fielder's choice, induced a Daniel Nava pop-out and Nate Spears ground out to end the inning.
Durham took the lead for good in the sixth, as Dan Johnson (3-for-5) singled to right with two out, scoring Desmond Jennings for an 8-7 advantage. Jennings, who just came off the DL, went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, a run scored and two RBI.
The Bulls added some insurance in the ninth as Russ Canzler singled home a run, and Leslie Anderson belted a two-run homer to right center for an 11-7 lead. Anderson drove in four runs.
Pawtucket (52-42) threatened in the ninth against Dane De La Rosa, one of two Bulls working back-to-back days. Ryan Lavarnway homered for the second time in as many days to make it 11-8. De La Rosa got the next batter, but walked back-to-back hitters to bring the tying run to the plate. De La Rosa got Brent Dlugach to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to preserve the win.
Durham (51-42) will complete the four-game series on Sunday at 1:05. Brian Baker starts against Pawtucket's Matt Fox. Coverage on 620 the Buzz begins at 12:50.
