Charlotte Knights News Release
(Fort Mill, SC) -- Twelve was the number of the night as Charlotte Knights batters walked twelve times, recorded twelve hits and defeated the Durham Bulls by a twelve-run margin of 14-2 in the opening game of the club's seven-game homestand at Knights Stadium on Monday.
On the same night he received the MiLB Rawlings Gold Glove Award, Knights center fielder Jordan Danks went 2-3 with three RBIs, a run scored, and two walks - pacing the Knights offense in the opening game of the four-game series.
Monday's pitching matchup was the same as last Wednesday in Durham when Alex Torres and the Durham Bulls got the 5-4 win over Charlie Shirek and the Knights. That game finished off the 2-1 series win for the Bulls. It was a different story this time around.
Charlotte (5-7) got on the scoreboard first when Hector Gimenez walked with the bases loaded in the home half of the first inning. That would be a recurring theme for the game. The walk by Torres brought home Greg Golson.
Dallas McPherson led off the bottom of the third inning by blasting the first pitch he saw into the Fort Mill night - for his first home run of the season. The left-hander hit it high off the left center field wall above the yellow line that designates a home run.
Torres walked three more in the fourth, including Golson with the bases loaded to make it 3-0 Knights. Torres walked seven in 3.1 innings. Marquis Fleming was brought in to replace him and McPherson greeted him with a line drive off the right field wall that plated two more and made it 5-0. Those runs were McPherson's second and third RBIs of the night. After the eighth walk of the evening by Durham pitching, Dan Johnson doubled in the left center field gap to clear the bases and push the margin to 8-0. Another base hit by Josh Phegley, who started the inning with a walk, brought in Johnson.
Shirek (2-1, 4.24 ERA) allowed six hits over five scoreless innings in what was his best outing so far this year. He struck-out five and walked none.
Durham finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh with two runs off of Charlotte left-hander Donnie Veal.
A sacrifice fly RBI by Johnson in the seventh gave him his fourth RBI of the night. For the second time on the night, Josh Phegley walked with the bases loaded to bring in a run. It was the third time on the night for the Knights as a team. Danks followed with a bases-clearing double to bring the score to the eventual 14-2 final. In all, Danks reached base four times and McPherson was 3-for-6 for the game.
The Knights and Bulls will resume the series Tuesday morning with first pitch at 11:15 a.m. Dylan Axelrod (1-0, 1.50) will take the hill for the Knights.
