Red Wings Rally to Drop Yankees at Frontier Field

Rochester, NY - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees played their first of 37 scheduled "home games" at the ballpark they will call home more than any other in 2012, Frontier Field in Rochester, New York on Monday night against the Rochester Red Wings in the first game of a four game series. The Yankees grabbed an early 3-1 lead but couldn't hang on as Rochester rallied to pick up a 5-3 win.

The Red Wings jumped out to a 1-0 lead picking up a single run off Yankees starter Dellin Betances (LP, 0-2) in the top of the second inning. With one out in the inning Joe Benson hit a towering drive to left center that bounced off the top of the fence and came back into play going for a two base hit. Matt Rizzotti knocked Benson home for the first of his three RBI's on the night and the Red Wings led 1-0.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning off Rochester starter Scott Diamond (WP, 3-0). Kevin Russo tripled to the gap in left center field past the out stretched glove of Darin Mastroianni and scored on an RBI single to left field by Colin Curtis. The Yankees would grab a short lived two run lead at 3-1 in the home half of the fourth on a two run blast over the wall and out of the ball park in left field from Ramiro Pena. Pena's first of the season also scored Francisco Cervelli who reached on a fielder's choice.

For the sixth time on the young season, Yankees pitching had an inning where it faced at least eight opposing batters. It happened on Monday in the top of the fifth inning Rochester sent nine men to the plate in the top of the fifth inning scoring four runs on four hits with two walks thrown in the mix. The Red Wings would chase Betances before the end of the inning and would grab a 5-3 lead they would not relinquish. The Yankees starter help start the rally with a one out walk to the number nine hitter Ray Chang. Back-to-back singles by Ben Revere and Tsuyashi Nishioka pulled the Wings to within one run at 3-2. Former Scranton/Wilkes-Barre outfielder Matt Carson single up the middle scoring Revere and the game was tied at 3-3. Manny Delcarmen came in out of the bullpen replacing Betances following a walk to Joe Benson. The first batter the new pitcher faced was Rizzotti, who singled to left scoring two runs and Rochester took a 5-3 lead.

Betances pitched 4.2 innings on the night allowing five runs (all earned) on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts, dropping to 0-2 on the season. Diamond pitched through the sixth inning for the Red Wings picking up his third win of the season against zero defeats. The left hander allowed three runs (all earned) on nine hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Casey Fein tossed 3.0 innings of scoreless relief for his second save of the year striking out four and walking one, allowing just one hit.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Rochester Red Wings continue their four game series Tuesday night at Frontier Field in Rochester, New York against the Red Wings with a 7:05 PM first pitch. Lefty Mike O'Connor (0-0, 1.93 ERA) makes the start for the Yankees, while the Rochester will send right hander Daryl Thompson (0-2, 4.00 ERA) to the mound.
