London Knights News Release
The London Knights Hockey Club is pleased to announce their intention to bid on the 2008 MasterCard Memorial Cup.
The tournament, which returns to Ontario for the 2007-08 season, was last hosted by London as the Knights went on to capture their first Memorial Cup in their 40th anniversary season. A formal letter of intent will be submitted to the Ontario Hockey League on February 2nd allowing the Knights the opportunity to formally bid to host the tournament in London.
"We believe that this bid will be great for the city and for the London Knights said General Manager Mark Hunter. "The tremendous support shown by our fans and the business community was a catalyst to winning our first bid in 2004. We really believe that the fans will support us as we try to bring the tournament back to London in 2008"
Trevor Whiffen, Governor of the London Knights and Chairman of the 2004 Memorial Cup said "There is no question that the City of London would enthusiastically welcome the opportunity to host this great event again in 2008. The London Knights organization is very excited about this possibility, and promises to stage the best Memorial Cup event ever if we are fortunate enough to be given the opportunity."
John Winston, General Manager of Tourism London said of the bid "This is a sterling opportunity to once again partner with the London Knights to secure a major sporting event for London. As witnessed in 2005 the financial impact and national exposure of a Memorial Cup Tournament can be substantial and we believe that London and region will demonstrate significant support for what is considered to be the premier showcase of Canadian junior hockey."
Brian Ohl, General Manager of the John Labatt Centre was equally excited about the bid stating "With the leadership of Mark and Dale Hunter and the tremendous support of the fans of the City of London, we realize that a great opportunity exists to bring the Memorial Cup tournament back to London and we are fully supportive of this initiative".
Once again the fans will be as critical to the success of the bid as they were in securing the tournament for the City of London in 2004.
