Westchester Knicks News Release
WHITE PLAINS, December 12, 2014 - The Westchester Knicks (5-5) won a thriller in the finals seconds of tonight's game, defeating the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (5-6) 99-98 in front of a sold out crowd.
Both teams started off slowly, Westchester only scoring four points in the first five minutes. Rio Grande Valley took advantage of the Knicks' inability to score, going on a 9-0 run in the middle of the first quarter. Westchester tried to pick up the pace, but left the quarter trailing 21-27.
The Knicks started to find their groove in the second quarter, tying up the score with just over four minutes to go in the half, but Westchester still trailed Rio Grande Valley at the half with the Vipers leading 54-49.
Westchester took the lead for the first time with 4:58 to go in the third quarter off a jumper from forward Orlando Sanchez, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Vipers who impressed from behind the arc all night and still led at the end of the quarter. Langston Galloway found his rhythm in the third, scoring eight of the Knicks' 29 points in the quarter but was taken out early in the fourth after a hard hit in a scramble for a rebound.
The Vipers took a double digit lead in the fourth, up twelve on Westchester for the biggest lead of the night. The lead lit a much-needed spark under the Knicks as Westchester came rallying back, tying it up 97-97 with 1:40 on the clock. After two missed free throws from Vipers forward Akil Mitchell, Darnell Jackson knocked in a shot to take the lead to 99-97.
Westchester would hold onto the lead to win the game in true comeback fashion, defeating the Vipers 99-98.
All five starters for the Knicks saw double digits with double doubles from Darnell Jackson (17 points, 12 rebounds) and Langston Galloway (12 points, 11 rebounds). Andre Barrett led the Knicks in scoring with 21 points and five assists. Orlando Sanchez added 20 points, seven rebounds, and three steals, while Thanasis Antetokounmpo ended the night with 16 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. Todd Mayo also found double digits with 11 points and six rebounds.
Gary Talton led scoring for the Vipers with 20 points, also adding nine assists. Akil Mitchell and Tony Bishop both had double doubles, Mitchell with 18 points and 16 rebounds, Bishop with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The Westchester Knicks return to the Westchester County Center tomorrow, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. to take on the Bakersfield Jam, the NBA Development League affiliate of the Phoenix Suns.
