Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-Matt Klinker allowed just five hits and one run over seven strong innings as the Dayton Dragons topped the Burlington Bees 3-1 on Friday night in the opener to a 10 game homestand. The Dragons have won five of their last six games and improved their season record to 15-11.

The game featured an appearance by Cincinnati Reds reliever David Weathers on an injury rehabilitation assignment. Weathers worked the first inning and threw seven pitches, all strikes, retiring all three batters he faced. Weathers is expected to pitch for the Dragons again Saturday night.

Dayton broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning. Brandon Waring walked to start the inning and Denis Phipps followed with a run-scoring double to make it 1-0. One batter later, Jason Bour's bouncing ball to the left side took a high hop past third baseman Jason Taylor as Phipps scored to make it 2-0.

Burlington scored once against Klinker in the top of the fifth, but the Dragons answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning. Zack Cozart singled to start the frame and Waring drilled a one-out double to drive in Cozart and make it 3-1.

Klinker walked no one and struck out six over seven innings of relief to earn the win and improve to 2-1 on the year. Tyler Rhoden pitched a perfect ninth inning for his first save.

The Dragons collected nine hits including two apiece for Phipps, Bour, and Keltavious Jones.

The Dragons host the Bees again Saturday in the second game of the series at 7:05 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Luis Montano (4-0, 1.27) will start for Dayton. The game will be televised on Time Warner Digital Cable Channel 99. Tommy Helms, a member of the Cincinnati Reds Hall-of-Fame, will serve as the guest commentator.
