Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla.- Colin Kleven turned in a solid seven-inning start on Monday, the Clearwater Threshers could not overcome an early deficit in a 3-1 loss to the Jupiter Hammerheads.
After a nine-pitch at-bat to the leadoff man Cameron Flynn ended with a single, Kleven would allow a run before recording an out. The big blow of the inning came on a two-RBI single by Austin Barnes to stretch the deficit to 3-0 before the Threshers would come to the plate.
Kleven (1-4) would settle down as the game progressed, allowing just five hits the remainder of his outing. On the night, the Threshers' starter went seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, with no walks and a strikeout.
Clearwater (9-25) had chances throughout the game to cut into the Jupiter lead before pushing across its lone run in the seventh. With two down and Andrew Knapp at second, Willie Carmona came through with a single to center to bring the Threshers to within two.
Threshers' manager Nelson Prada was ejected in the top of the eighth inning after a close play at second base.
Matt Juengel hit a liner down the right-field line and slid into second just behind the throw. Base umpire James Pattison called Juengel safe due to an apparent bobble by shortstop Angelo Mora on the tag. The call sent Prada racing out to meet with Pattison, where the umpire wasted no time in tossing the head coach.
The Threshers had one more chance in the ninth to tie the game.
With Knapp at second with two outs, Carmona gave the first pitch a ride to right, but it was caught just in front of the wall by Jesus Solorzano to end the contest.
Threshers' centerfielder Pete Lavin was rewarded with the Florida State League player of the week honor before the game, but went 0-for-4, snapping an eight-game hitting streak.
Clearwater will look to even up the four-game series against Jupiter (16-21) Tuesday night at Brighthouse Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and can be heard live on threshersbaseball.com, with the pregame show beginning at 6:45 p.m.
