Wausau Woodchucks News Release
BATTLE CREEK - The Wisconsin Woodchucks took advantage of two great pitching performances Friday night, defeating the Battle Creek Bombers 4-1.
The Bombers and âChucks were scoreless through the first three-and-a-half innings, before the Bombers' third-baseman Troy White hit a solo homerun deep to left field, giving the Bombers a 1-0 lead.
The score would remain 1-0, as Bombers starter Ben Ballentine had a no-hitter through five innings- before Garrett Yrigoyen led the inning off with the first hit of the night for the âChucks, singling to left field. He was followed by an Austin Coleman single, and a walk to Shain Stoner to load the bases up for the âChucks. That brought Derek Peterson to the dish, and he delivered for the âChucks- slashing a hit over the left fielder's head, which scored two runs and gave the Woodchucks a 2-1 lead.
The score stayed remained until the eighth, when the Woodchucks came across with two more. Carlos Escobar Jr. lead the inning off with a walk, and was followed two batters later by an Alex Grunenwald single, before Robbie De La Cruz got the big hit- as he lashed an RBI single into right field. After Kyle Secciani hit a sacrifice fly to score Gunenwald, the âChucks would end the inning on top, 4-1.
That was all the Woodchucks would need, as they beat the Bombers, 4-1. Richard Klein got the win for the Woodchucks in his first appearance with the team- pitching five and one third innings, allowing 10 hits and only one run. Ryan Iverson came on in relief of Klein in the sixth inning, and ended up finishing the game to pick up the save. Iverson pitched three and two-thirds innings, allowing only two hits and striking out three.
Ballentine took the loss, as he ended up pitching five innings, allowing three hits, and two earned runs, after starting the game with five innings of no hit baseball.
The Woodchucks improved to 3-6 on the season, and finished their road trip with a 2-1 record. They head back home tomorrow, where it will be Woody Bobblehead Night at Athletic Park, with the first pitch coming at 6:35.
The Bombers fell to 7-3 on the season, as they take on the Madison Mallards for a three-game set at home.
