Kingston vs Barrie: Road to the 2nd Round

April 3, 2018 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kingston Frontenacs News Release

Gabe Vilardi helped send the Kingston Frontenacs into the second round with an overtime goal in a 3 OT thriller on Saturday night. At the time, Kingston didn't know who they would face in round two, but they didn't have to wait long to find out who it would be. The very next day the Barrie Colts eliminated the Mississauga Steelheads in game 6 of their first-round series to set up the fourth all time playoff match up between Kingston and Barrie.

The Frontenacs had a bit of a scare to open the playoffs when North Bay took game 1 at the Rogers K-Rock Centre. They bounced back beautifully winning the next four games to claim the series win. Gabe Vilardi was a driving force in Kingston's series victory. He recorded 12 points (5 G, 7 A) in the series and was named OHL player of the week for his efforts. Sean Day was the top scoring defenseman in the opening round with 8 points, including 2 goals in the series clinching game 5.

Barrie was given a strong test from the Steelheads in round 1. Mississauga had jumped out to a 2-1 series lead before Barrie won 3 games in a row to move on. The Colts were led in scoring by a Kingston born player in Aaron Luchuk. He matched Vilardi's 12 points. Barrie's line up received a big boost when Andrei Svechnikov returned from suspension in game 5. He recorded 5 points in just two games. The top line for the Colts recorded 27 points in the series to help put Barrie into the second round.

Kingston took 3 of the 4 head to head match ups in the regular season scoring 20 goals total in those 4 games. Both teams are capable of putting up big offensive numbers. Luchuk led the league in scoring in the regular season while Dmitry Sokolov finished fifth. Kingston had three players sitting in the top 12 at seasons end in Robertson, Pu and Nyman. Gabe Vilardi had the second-best points per game average, but only played half the season while recovering from a back injury.

The series kicks off Wednesday night in Barrie. Game 3 will be in Kingston on Sunday night at 6 PM. Tickets are available for both games 3 and 4 now.
