Kingsport Comes up Short against Bluefield

July 25, 2021 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Kingsport Road Warriors News Release

BLUEFIELD, WV - The Kingsport Road Warriors trailed the Bluefield Ridge Runners by a run in the fifth inning.

With the Road Warriors in the field, the umpires pulled the players into the dugout because of a nearby lightning strike. Rain started to fall but the tarp wasn't rolled out.

Less than 40 minutes later, Kingsport received news that the game was ruled final, resulting in a 1-0 loss to the Ridge Runners Sunday evening.

Kingsport (1-7) applied pressure in the fifth, moving the tying run into scoring position with one out. Bluefield right-hander Shawn Runey, who was making his first Appalachian League start, buckled down and stranded the runner at second.

Runey's counterpart, Cole Hales, held the Ridge Runners (23-21) in check, yielding just one run in three innings. Hales extended his scoreless streak to 10 1/3 innings before allowing the lone tally in his final frame.

After two days off, the Road Warriors return to action Wednesday with a doubleheader against the Greeneville Flyboys.
