Kings To Take Part In Rookie Tournament

LOS ANGELES, CA - The Los Angeles Kings, the parent club of the Manchester Monarchs, will participate in a rookie tournament for the second consecutive year with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Phoenix Coyotes and San Jose Sharks. The tournament will be held September 9-13 at Disney ICE in Anaheim. The Kings hosted the inaugural tournament in 2003 at the HealthSouth Training Center in El Segundo.

Concluding on Monday, September 13, with a championship game as well as a third-place consolation contest, the tournament will feature many of the top prospects from each of the four respective teams competing in a round-robin format. Among those representing the Kings are former first-round selections Denis Grebeshkov (2002 NHL Entry Draft) and David Steckel (2001 NHL Entry Draft), 2004 AHL All-Rookie team member Noah Clarke, and a member of the 2003 Memorial Cup Champion Kitchener Rangers, Peter Kanko. Monarchs forwards Greg Hogeboom and George Parros are also scheduled to participate in the tournament.

Grebeshkov, 20, appeared in 43 games with the Monarchs during the 2003-04 season, recording 9 points (2-7=9) and 34 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound native of Yaroslavl, Russia, also appeared in four games with the Kings last season, recording one point (0-1=1) and zero penalty minutes. Grebeshkov was selected by the Kings in the first-round (18th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Steckel, 22, appeared in 41 games with Ohio State University, recording 30 points (17-13=30) and 44 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound native of Westbend, Wisconsin, was selected by the Kings in the first-round (30th overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Clarke, 25, appeared in 71 games with the Monarchs last season, recording 51 points (25-26=51) and 24 penalty minutes. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound native of LaVerne, California, also appeared in two games with the Kings last season, recording one point (0-1=1) and zero penalty minutes. Clarke became the first native Californian to appear in a Kings jersey on December 16, 2003. He was selected by the Kings in the ninth-round (250th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.

Kanko, 20, appeared in six games with the Monarchs last season, recording four points (1-3=4) and four penalty minutes. The 5-foot-10, 201-pound native of Pribram, Czech Republic, also appeared in 55 games with the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League, recording 68 points (26-42=68) and 97 penalty minutes. Kanko was selected by the Kings in the third-round (66th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Hogeboom, 21, appeared in three games with the Monarchs last season, recording one point (0-1=1) and zero penalty minutes. The 6-foot, 205-pound native of Etobicoke, Ontario, also appeared in 41 games with the University of Miami-Ohio, recording 42 points (19-23=42) and 16 penalty minutes. Hogeboom was selected by the Kings in the fifth-round (157th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Parros, 24, appeared in 57 games with the Monarchs last season, recording nine points (3-6=9) and 136 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound native of Randolph, New Jersey, was selected by the Kings in the eighth-round (222nd overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
