ROCKFORD, Ill. - Kalamazoo got all the offense it needed in the second inning.
The Kings sent nine to the plate and scored five times en route to beating the Rockford RiverHawks, 5-2, at Marinelli Field. Kalamazoo tied Rockford for the Frontier League West lead.
Tim Brown and Justin McClain began the inning with back-to-back doubles off Rockford starter Tanner Watson, then Jason Sullivan followed with a RBI single. Two Rockford errors later in the inning led to three unearned runs.
Watson (2-4) lasted eight innings, giving up six hits. He struck out seven and walked three.
Brandon Martin (1-1) pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win. Josh Daws got the last five outs for his ninth save.
The rubber match of the three-game series is at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday. The final Saturn of Rockford/Q-95 Youth Clinic of the summer is scheduled for 5 p.m. It's also a Sherwin Williams Sure-Win Wednesday and a Hooters Hot Wing Wednesday. The Hooters Girls will be in the Miller Lite Beer Oasis at 6 p.m. with a limited supply of free hot wings for hungry fans.
The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub.
