Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Mark Kiger's three-run, ninth-inning homer was the game-winner for the Binghamton Mets, who picked up a 5-3, come-from-behind win over the Connecticut Defenders at Dodd Stadium Saturday. The win snaps Binghamton's two-game losing streak.

Connecticut (23-35) went ahead against B-Mets starter Bobby Parnell in the first when John Bowker's groundout scored Trey Webb from third. The B-Mets rallied to tie in the third when Mike Nickeas led off with a double and scored on Wilson Batista's two-out double.

Parnell, who was making his Double-A debut, gave up two more runs in the fourth when Patrick Dobson doubled in Bowker and pitcher Dave McKae hit a sacrifice fly to score Mark Minicozzi for a 3-1 Connecticut lead. Parnell would depart after five innings.

Meanwhile, the B-Mets (27-31) were shut down by McKae. After allowing Caleb Stewart's leadoff single in the fourth, the righthander retired the last 15 in a row, leaving after eight innings.

Connecticut closer Brian Anderson (1-2) replaced McKae in the ninth and promptly gave up a leadoff homer to Batista. Fernando Martinez and Stewart followed with singles before Brett Harper's flyout to center moved Martinez to third. Up came Kiger, who hit a hanging breaking ball over the leftfield fence for a three-run homer.

Robert Paulk, Marcelo Perez and Carlos Muñiz followed Parnell with four innings of shutout relief. Perez (1-3) pitched a 1-2-3 eighth for the win and Muñiz struck out the side in the ninth for his ninth save in 11 chances.

Sunday, the B-Mets play the rubber game of a three-game series at Connecticut. Kevin Mulvey (5-5, 3.75) will start for the B-Mets against Garrett Broshuis (1-7, 3.25) of Connecticut. Game time is 2:05 from Dodd Stadium with the radio broadcast beginning at 1:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

Notes: The B-Mets, 0-17 when trailing after eight innings entering this road trip, now have two such wins on the trip (also Tuesday @ TRE)...Kiger entered the game 0 for his last 16...Perez hasn't allowed a run in his last four outings, spanning 5 2/3 innings...McKae was making his second Double-A start. He threw seven shutout innings to win his debut Sunday @ POR.
