Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA- The red-hot Dubuque Fighting Saints have won seven straight games, and this weekend they welcome the Youngstown Phantoms for an action-packed pair of games that feature fun both on and off the ice. Friday's game is one for the children, as the Saints host Kids Run the Rink, presented by ManorCare Health Services and media partner Extreme 107.1. The evening will feature children taking over all aspects of the arena and assisting with the game night production. Saturday, the fun continues as the Fighting Saints combine two great things--Head Coach Matt Shaw, and the classic movie, The Shawshank Redemption, for "Matt Shawshank Redemption Night." Saturday is College Night featuring a great deal for students.
Last season, Kids Run the Rink gained the Fighting Saints national attention in *Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal*. On Friday, over 30 kids will participate in all aspects of running a Fighting Saints game. Media partner Extreme 107.1 helped recruit children from the Tri-State region to participate as game night employees. When fans enter the arena, they will see children scanning tickets and selling gameday programs. Kids will help usher fans to their seats and a children's promotional staff will make sure in-between periods activities go off without a hitch. You won't want to miss a mini-Bernie skating around on the ice with his larger namesake.
Other featured kids will be junior officials, taking the ice as referees and linesman, and opening the penalty box door during the game. There will also be a junior public address announcer who will take over the public address microphone and help belt out player introductions and commentary.
The music played at the arena Friday will include popular kids favorites, and one child will be a junior deejay, spinning the tunes that they want to hear during the evening. Kids will also participate in "Extreme Bobsledding," an intermission contest on the ice presented by Extreme 107.1. The night will also feature games and trivia related to children's toys, as well as a Simon Says contest where the kids will be telling the adults what to do. Puck drop for Friday's game is 7:35 p.m.
Saturday, the Fighting Saints host "Matt Shawshank Redemption Night." This year marks the 20-year anniversary of the classic movie's release, and with the title of the film going hand in hand with the last name of Dubuque's head coach, the two were a good fit. Add to the equation that "The Shawkshank Redemption" is one of Coach Shaw's favorite movies, the night was a match made in heaven.
The evening will feature many themes from the 1994 film that stars Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. Two contestants will compete in an on-ice competition to "Escape from Shawshank," where they have been framed for a crime and are attempting to escape prison. Much like in the movie, they will be handcuffed, have to rip through a poster covering their escape route, crawl through a tunnel, and be the first to sit in a chair at the end of the course to gain their freedom. The night will also feature trivia about both Matt Shaw and the movie, The Shawshank Redemption.
Saturday is College Night. With a valid college ID, students receive an end ticket and $5 in Saints Bucks, which is good for food and drink at the concessions stands or for Fighting Saints merchandise, for only $10. An end section ticket is normally $12.95 at the box office on the day of the game. College students can order over the phone by using their school name to get the deal. When they pick up their tickets at Will Call, they will need to present a valid college ID. Puck drop for Saturday's game is slated for 7:05 p.m.
Tickets are available to both games this weekend by calling 563.583.6880 or visiting DubuqueFightingSaints.com. Fans are encouraged to purchase in advance to guarantee the best seat location.
